Bird watching typically conjures images of people pursuing a relaxing day of staring at the sky with binoculars. Ah, but then there is the competitive side of birdwatching.
Flying EMUSA ... err, Elbows
For many people, something that is running only if there is an element worth competitiveness. With bird watching, no such element really exists unless you include add to your list of life as a competition. Even if it does, is a somewhat vague, indirect form of competition. This is where competition comes into play birding
Days also known as a "bird" or "big days", bird watching competitions are typically one or two day events held in a specific geographic area. The idea behind the contest is to gather a group of birding enthusiasts together and see that match the majority of species in a given period.
As the Code Honor is linked to reporting of the account, isnÂ't exaggerated the competitive aspect of such competitions. This isnÂ'ta like bass fishing where they roll in a stadium after counting their comments before the crowd yelled. Then again, perhaps an opportunity presents itself ...
Can you imagine ESPN covering the event?
"Bob, it seems that Longbill Louie is in good shape today. Watch the way that balances the binoculars and what rotation!  "
Probably not, but a man has to dream!
In fact, participate in a birding competition is a good idea for two reasons. First, the organizers tend to choose places with a large number of species that have not documented before. Secondly, it is a great opportunity to meet other people who have caught the itch. This can often lead to future opportunities to bird watch with new friends previously unknown areas.
If you have to compete with the birds, see the official competitions there. The World Series of Birding is organized by the New Jersey Audubon Society. Teams of birders are formed and pitted against each other in early May each year. Under the name of humor, like "four Loons" a "Stokes Stompers" and so on, is a good time. The next competition is 13 May 2006, so you have plenty of time to come in the form of top birding.
Birding competitions are a little more serious to me but to each his own. Have a great day, however, is a great way for children interested in seeing.
