Hat Red Victory

In his inaugural address Barrack Obama urged us to unite, to our common challenges. Again and again called to join us so we can work in harmony with Americans of all economic levels, race and education - and political color. In fact, we must unite if we want to solve the difficult problems facing our nation and world. But this is a difficult task for both Democrats and Republicans, especially in our current take-no-prisoners, win at any cost culture, it is impossible in an atmosphere of hatred and revenge.

However, in many ways is the climate in our country today.

All relationship, from marriage to business to politics, survives or falls on the ability to forgive past hurts and forge alliances. It is the only way that people with differing views can work together successfully.

The recent presidential election has a great example of how success comes when we work together after forgiving those who have harmed us. During the primary Senator Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton traded some barbs sharp enough for both the Republicans' joy and their respective camps did not like it at all. But look what happened: when Sen. Obama blocked the nomination, Senator Clinton supported him in word and action. The two political camps forgave other campaign rhetoric hurts and reality worked together. The result? The victory over the Republicans, never resolved its internal disputes among the conservative / Christian with the more libertarian wing John McCain. And as an added benefit of their reconciliation, Mrs. Clinton was appointed Secretary of State, one of the most important positions worldwide.

Are we going to keep things from children as our president calls (get, even the celebration of the bitterness) and work together, or we will return to politics as usual and preparing for an even nastier round of "critical areas". "I very much hope that we will be wise enough to do so, although it will be difficult. Forgiveness is always difficult, because it goes against our feelings of righteous anger. But it is necessary that we will heal.

I know firsthand the difficulty of forgiving someone who hurt you badly, and I know firsthand the blessings that come when you do.

Five years ago masked a gunman killed my wife and youngest son, and tried to kill me. As a Christian, I knew that I forgive this person without a name who stole all my life, but as a man who knew he could not. All I wanted was to hurt so bad and whenever he could - and I suspect many readers think the same about their political opponents, either to the party to leave the White House, or movement in Instinctively know that hatred and violence only leads to more conflict, but revenge is so human, even when we know that is wrong! I believe God gives people - And the nations - helps when we ask, so I asked, and gave me a miraculously complete forgiveness for all involved. I did not know why he chose to work in this way, but I do not know why I was still alive, either. I should have died that night.

The next day I began to understand, because I learned that my oldest son was under investigation for organizing the killings. By helping me to forgive everyone before they know they could include my son, I was able to get him in a way that did not think was possible, and that allowed him to escape the darkness and hatred that was hidden for so long. While the history is complex and only recently begun to clear, and although he has been sentenced to death for his crimes, the bottom line is that my forgiveness is causing a great good in a horrible situation. These blessings would never have come if I had not forgiven first stranger. The blessings of healing and the common approach await our nation if we are sufficiently brave enough to follow our president and forgiving.

There is real hope in my story, and in defiance of President Obama. If the great good can come of something so horrible as the murders, then much good can come to forgive and working side by side with those who used to hate. But hope is what this new administration is based, and that's a good thing, because hope is what we need to move forward, both in the new year, and this new administration. I, for one, will back our president on this, because I think forgiveness and reconciliation are the only way to achieve our common goals of peace and prosperity. To paraphrase John Lennon, "Give him a chance of forgiveness."
