CLIMATE:

Tropical. Each month is rainfall, May to December, but they are the wettest months. Cyclones occur from November to May. A well structured in stages warnings exist. During the cyclone, visitors not allowed to leave their accommodation and car insurance policies often cease to be valid.

CURRENCY:

1 Mauritius Rupee = 100 cents. Travel with EURO rupees or traveler checks. There are no restrictions to foreign or local currency brought into the country. The export of foreign currency is limited to the amount declared on arrival. The bank rupees airport currency exchange on departure. Credit cards accepted are American Express, Diners Club, Visa and Mastercard. Major hotels exchange travelers checks and bank notes.

ELECTRICITY:

230 volts, 50Hz. Continental two-pin plugs are most common, but Round three-pin flat plugs have been observed. Take a travel plug.

HEALTH:

The yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers over 1 year of age coming from infected areas. Visitors are advised to take precautions prior to the arrival of malaria (in some rural areas there is no risk of Isla Rodrigues), hepatitis A, polio and typhoid. Other health concerns are high constant humidity (it can affect people with chronic conditions), sinusitis and hay fever (July-August), influenza (risk throughout the year), and diarrhea.

LANGUAGE:

English is the official language and recognized throughout the island. French is also a principal and Creole is spoken by all the villagers. Oriental and Indian languages are also spoken.

Social Conventions:

More than half of the population is Hindu, with respect to their traditions and religion. Dress appropriately to visit religious sanctuaries (no shorts, miniskirts, etc) and remove their shoes when entering mosques and temples. Clothes are clothes beach during the day and casual wear at night.

TIPS:

About 10 percent of Taxation is added to all the hotels and restaurants bills. Tipping is not mandatory, and remains a gesture of appreciation left to the discretion of the host. Tipping taxi drivers is not common.

Port-Louis:

Capital and main port of Mauritius, French colonial buildings such as the 18th century Government House and the Municipal Theater, Museum of Natural History, Market, Avenue Edouard VII, Fort Adelaide, The World Museum of Masks, the Caudan coastlines and Port Louis.

Pamplemousses

The gardens are known to naturalists all over the world for its large collection of indigenous and exotic plants, incl. the giant Victoria amazonica water lilies and many species of palms, of particular interest is the palm talipot, said to flower once every sixty years and then dies.

Grand Bassin:

One of the two natural lakes of the island, lying in a crater of an extinct volcano and is the place of pilgrimage for Hindus, on Maha particular for Shivaratree.

Chamarel:

A mound of undulating land stretching in contrasting layers of color, spots of blue, green, red and yellow earth are believed to be the result of erosion, nearby waterfall emerges from the moors and virgin vegetation and is startlingly beautiful.

Trou Aux Cerfs:

An extinct crater 85m deep and 200 meters wide, enjoy a wide view of the island of the rim.

Souillac and Gris Gris:

Small coastal town with beautiful scenery cliff and not bathing in the south is the popular view of Gris-Gris, where you can see the waves breaking on dark rocks, empty.

Domaine du Chasseur:

Near the Mahebourg, a forest park of lush vegetation and wild animals including orchids like deer, deer, wild boars and monkeys, which covers 2000 hectares.
