Since golf was first originated on the coast of Scotland during the 15th century, golfers have relied on many different media to determine the distance of your golf ball to the flag or some other point in the course. Of trees or shrubs used as markers, to plates sunk into the ground, the footage clearly marked sprays, the golfer simply "eye-ball distance.
In 1999, GolfLogix, Inc. pioneered the handheld golf GPS solution with the introduction of the original GolfLogix. This golf GPS system using GPS technology to provide golfers with precise distance information to hazards, and the front middle and back of every green, which provides an enjoyable golf experience. In that time until 2005, measuring devicess were not sanctioned by the United States Golf Association (USGA), golf's governing body and as a result of these could be used only for recreational purposes, but not in tournaments, or when determining a handicap of golf.
On 27 September 2005, the USGA announced the sanction of the use of distance measuring devices 2006 from January 1. New Decision 14-3/0.5 have a Committee to allow the use of GPS and golf range finders by Local Rule golf. The standard applies to devices that measure distance only, not some other conditions that might affect a player game (eg wind or gradient). In the absence of such a local rule, a measuring device that remain contrary to the Standards.
Since then there have been many entries in this market. Golf GPS systems were introduced for the iGolf, Sonocaddie, and SureShot and sold through various channels including their own websites and through golf shops.
Companies such as Bushnell, Nikon, ATN, Leupold, and Konus, long time players in the business of optics, began introducing developed laser range finders for golf industry. Bushnell Golf Rangefinders are used by over 95% of golfers professionals and their caddies in practice rounds to measure distances accurately before the tournament rounds.
The purchase of measuring devices has been skyrocketed in the last two years. Not only these units provide precise distance information for the golfer (which can only improve your game) that improve pace of play significantly. Golfers with a GPS or rangefinder golf course and not have to step outside of the distances of sprinklers, locate the nearest marker, or "eyeball" the distance to the flag. In fact, the only thing that slows down is his playing partner over the course borrowing Sprint his unit.
